The Secret Language of Comics

Human Sponge

For my Sunday sketch, I was having trouble creating an idea that used a 3D object. I am at home for the weekend and searched my room for something I thought would fit. After being stumped on what to do, I decided to do something that represented my current state of mind. I found a sponge. I drew the arms and legs on the sponge to give it human-like features. The human-like features of the sponge represent what many other college freshmen and I are feeling right now: The constant need to absorb and adapt to the new experiences and challenges of college. More specifically, the thought bubbles help with representing trying to balance all of what college offers: academic rigor, social experiences, living on your own, and trying to make this place your home.

Making Use of my Microwave

Swiveling back and forth in my desk chair, my mind draws a blank as I try to brainstorm ideas for this sketch. My mind wanders first to basketball, but quickly pivots as that would be cliche for a student on the Emory Women’s Basketball team. Eyes wandering around my dorm room, my gaze finally lands on the empty easy mac container teetering on the edge of my overflowing trash can. Easy mac and cheese has become my favorite comfort food that I can make with ease in my small dorm room. As I draw, I think eagerly of the next time I can make an easy mac.

AirSalon Pro

On the day I drew this sketch, my roommate just lost his AirPods Pro. As a caring friend, my first reaction was to mock and laugh at him. With this incident, I thought of using my AirPods for the Sunday Sketch. I always thought the earbuds were shaped in a unique way, like a shower head. At the same time, I was planning to find a barber shop for a haircut. Thus, I made the case as the resting pillow that customers lie on while the barber washes the hair. For the rest of the sketch, I included some objects and details that a normal barber shop would have.

Puppy Cloud

Puppy Cloud:

The idea for the sketch “Puppy Cloud” was born from my passion for capturing the beauty and whimsy of clouds through photography. I have always been fascinated by the ever-changing shapes and forms of clouds in the sky and enjoyed finding resemblances to various animals within them. One day, as I was reviewing my collection of cloud photographs, I noticed the striking resemblance between one particular fluffy, cumulus cloud formation and a playful puppy. What’s more, this puppy is shaped quite like my friend’s Teddy. This finding inspires me to blend the natural wonder of the sky with the heartwarming charm of puppies, resulting in a sketch that would celebrate the fantastic world of clouds and the innocence of our beloved canine companions.

I prefer the volume up

I came up with this sketch when I was trying to do work but people were trying to have a conversation with me. I noticed that I kept adjusting my airpods and the volume so I can hear them speak but also point out that I’m busy. I remember at one point just staring at my airpods and imagining the volume increasing than being muted repeatedly.

Her cross-Eyed demon dog

I took the hair clip out of my hair while trying to think of an idea for the English assignment. Maybe I could use pom-poms for stars or a chip bag as a dress? I mindlessly played with my hair clip, holding it open then letting it snap shut. It kind of looked like teeth.

Major is my best friend’s dog. And he is the only dog I have ever disliked.

Major is a Chihuahua mix, a fearless dog that ruined my favorite hoodie and two of my shirts with his tiny, sharp teeth. I drew him in all his vicious, trembling, cross-eyed glory and used my hair clip to represent his teeth and his nose.

Clash of the Pill Bugs

Clash of the Pill Bugs

I had several objects I wanted to try to incorporate in a drawing, but I struggled creatively when trying to add them into the sketch. I was sick earlier this past week, giving me the idea to use my Tylenol and Advil pills as objects. They are small enough objects that I had a couple ideas of how to draw around them, but after seeing the cockroaches at night here, I knew they’d work well as bugs. I ran into the issue of not having any colored pencils, however. I wanted to draw the environment but gave up on that, so instead I used a piece of ham from my fridge as the source of conflict between the orange and white bugs. The hardest part about this sketch was trying to keep the pills in the right space, because it was difficult to align them every time they shifted.

Literacy Narrative Reflection

I really enjoyed writing this essay because it helped me reflect on my unique journey and relationship with the english language. It helped me further understand when I started to truly care about my writing and reading skills. I had a slow start to the free writing. However, as my ideas started to form the free writing exercise helped me discover that my genuine passion for reading and writing stemmed from my junior-year english class. Before this, I never distinctly read anything significant that really made me want to sit in a chair and read something for “fun”. The writing process I felt for this was especially difficult because I had a very tough time associating memories or moments within my life with reading and writing because I did not find it interesting for the longest period of time. On top of this, writing about yourself with very little bits of memory of yourself makes it hard. One sentence I really am proud of within my essay I find the most interesting within my essay is “I started to recognize symbols, themes, motifs, and other rhetorical choices in the common shows I loved to watch, understanding, even more, why they were so highly rated.”

I discovered the power of personal connections and experiences influence my interests and identity as a reader. My passion for reading and writing reflects my upbringing and heritage, from bedtime stories that inspired my love for fantasy narratives to essays that celebrated my heritage. The writing process was very different because I have never written an essay or report analyzing my own behaviors or interests in reading and writing. It did feel strange to do the free-writing exercises at first because it was challenging to go into such depth on activities that happened ten years ago. Still, the free-writing process did help me a lot to construct my essay, as I included the bedtime anecdote, which played a massive role in my essay. What I found surprising is that I like to write about myself a lot, which was strange to me because whenever a person in a job interview asks, “Can you tell me about yourself?” I always struggle to respond. I believe that the most exciting sentence from my essay is: My reading interests in quarantine were similar to that of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears and Little Red Riding Hood, an action-packed story with a hero protagonist vanquishing evil.

Sharpened Student

My “Sunday Sketch” consists of a college student during midterm season, and his stomach is filled with a bunch of pencil shavings, which convey two different meanings. One of the meanings is that during midterms, a lot of college kids are stressing out a lot, which causes them to study late hours for these tests, which also causes them to eat food that is unhealthy late at night, such as ramen, chips, and candy, which is displayed by the pencil stavings inside of the student’s stomach. The pencil shavings also illustrate the inner turmoil these students are going through because they know that these midterms have a considerable impact on their final grades, resulting in a lot of stress. In addition, these pencil shavings could demonstrate that the student is studying for a class they do not enjoy, which indicates that the student is overwhelmed and does not have a thorough understanding of the subject matter.

P.S: I apologize if the drawing is a bit janky, but it conveys my point
