The Secret Language of Comics

Avatar

Hello visitors!

Welcome to my page. My inspiration for this avatar was that people usually pronounce my name as “coffee” when they read it on paper and even after I say it myself. In recent years, I have learned to embrace it as something I can laugh about rather than be ever so slightly annoyed by. As you may be able to see, the backbone of my avatar is its coffee mug structure and the dark brown color which resembles a full cup of coffee as well as my skin tone. I also made sure to include a smile as a prominent feature of my avatar in order to illustrate that I like to bring positive energy into whichever room I enter. The accents in my hair depict the scattered dyed strands in my hair. With this avatar I have created a character that highlights several parts of who I am.

Avatar

I chose this image because I love the outdoors and it is a photo I took the evening before I left for college. To me, it reminds me of home and my friends. The brightness of the sun causes the trees to darken and fade to a silhouette, serving as a good metaphor for the type of person I am, as I tend to give my full attention to the thing that I am focused on.

Avatar Week 1 Sketch

I chose this image of a box with old baseballs, a check, and some empty space because I believe it symbolizes some of the most important parts of myself. Academically, I believe the empty space within the box represents my openness to unique perspectives, ideas, and stories that we will read in this class. I chose baseball because sports and fitness are large parts of my identity as I love to work out and play various sports with friends in my free time. Finally, the check represents my interest in business as it is my intended major.
One difficulty I had in making my avatar was finding a photo that symbolizes both academic and personal interests. I wanted to use an avatar that would not be forcing the two ideas but would naturally allow both to be symbolized. Additionally, I had difficulty with figuring out how to add it to the website. This was due to trying to understand how to use my new Computer with a different operating system.

Sketch #1: Avatar

The image shown is the avatar I have created for this course. My avatar is an illustration I made a while ago of a Sanrio character named Pochacco raising his eyebrow suspiciously. I chose this as my avatar because Sanrio was a huge part of my childhood. From backpacks to water bottles, almost everything I owned had some sort of Sanrio character plastered on it. In terms of the photo editing, I struggled with adding my name to the image. In order to achieve the final product, I had to rely on an application called Picsart instead of Pixlr.

My AVATAR

In many ways, this picture captures who I am as a person and what my interests are. This picture depicts many family-sized boats docked in a harbor, which relates to me very well because my parents have a lake house up in North Georgia, which we visit often in the warmer months. I also like to consider Lake House my happy place, as I have tons of fun up there and have incredible bonding time with my family and friends. In addition, this photo also represents nature and being outside, which is another aspect of life that I enjoy. Whether it be playing sports or going on hikes, I love any activity that involves the outdoors. Water and boats also play a significant role in the picture, which signifies the sense of travel, which is a fun and important part of my life. My family likes to go on one “unique” vacation every year, where we explore new world places. Some recent sites we have explored include Spain, Paris, the Bahamas, Canada, the Netherlands, etc. Traveling is exciting because we can explore the world’s cultures and see how people go about their day.

Sketch 1: Avatar

Due: 8/27

Tag: sk1

Objectives:

  • Very basic photo editing
  • Introduction to the concept of Creative Commons
  • Uploading and publishing to your new WordPress site
  • Visual images as representations of complex conceptual topics

Avatar

Once you’ve created your web site, you need an image to represent yourself and/or your site for the class: an avatar. Your avatar can be whatever you want it be but try to create something that both reflects your personality and speaks to the topic for this class in some way.

Start by choosing one or more of your own photos as the basis of the avatar, drawing something yourself and scanning it, or finding one or more Creative Commons-licensed images on Flickr that you can modify. (Make certain to keep a note for yourself of the URL for the photos you use if they are not your own.)

CC-licensed images

Creative Commons licenses work with copyright law so that creators can share their work in a way that allows others to use it with attribution. The video on the left gives a good overview of the concept of Creative Commons licensing. The one on the right gives more explanation of how they work. They are short and worth watching.

You can find CC-licensed images by choosing licensed images on Flickr or with an advanced Google image search.

Edit Photo

Crop and otherwise edit the photo(s) in a photo editing application (like Photoshop or Pixlr). You can create a layered or collage effect, if you’d like. Add your name on your badge in such a way that it’s legible — it can be your full name, just your first name, or the nickname you want to be called this semester.

Your final badge should be square and at least 512 pixels wide and high. Please make certain your badge is square so that it will fit into the design on the student sites page.

Publish

When you’re done, you’ll need to put the image two places, with an optional third:

First

Load the badge into your Media Library and publish it to your site in a blog post. (If adding it as a feature image means that the entire square image won’t display, then also insert the image into the post itself.)

Include information and links in the post about the source(s) for images included in your badge.

Write a paragraph or two about why you chose those images, what aspects of yourself and your interests are represented in your badge, and/or what difficulties you faced in creating the badge.

Please tag your post with the tag “sk1,” plus any additional tags that you think are appropriate.

Second

Go into your dashboard to Design > Customize > Site Identity. Load the image as your site icon (not as the logo).

Finally

If you do not already have a gravatar, create a gravatar account and load your avatar there. From then on, your avatar will show up as your picture when you leave comments here and on other students’ sites.
