The Secret Language of Comics

AVATAR

There are very few things that I am sure about, but one of them is this: Paddington 2 is one of the best children’s movies of all time. Few movies of our time deliver the seemingly obvious message of “be kind” without being either condescending or cliché, but Paddington 2 does it magnificently. Paddington is a polite, sometimes naïve bear who loves marmalade, constantly causing problems but also spreading an endless amount of joy and comfort wherever he goes. In his red hat, blue coat, and suitcase, Paddington is an icon and role model.

I also really like Legos and used to build Lego sets with my dad. Every birthday or Christmas since I was little, we would sit down together and build my Lego set, with me building it incorrectly and my dad patiently breaking it apart and fixing it.

I did not know what pixels were and had a five minute research session on what pixels are. The rest was not too challenging.

Literacy Narrative Reflection

Writing my literacy narrative allowed me to examine the experiences that made me the reader and writer I am today.(Photo Credit: Flickr)

While writing this literacy narrative, I reflected on experiences that made me a better reader and writer and how my emotions play into it.

As I wrote the X-Pages Exercise, I noticed how writing about an experience I was not fond of resulted in the writing having a negative tone. When writing about experiences that positively impacted my writing, I noticed an underlying positive connotation that made reading more enjoyable. I incorporated this trend into my essay, where I could touch on my observation in multiple instances. Other people could relate to this, as many people write their works based on their emotions; the covers of some of the comics we will cover this semester show this concept, including Zoe Thurgood’s It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth.

This narrative allowed me to reexamine the methods I use while reading and writing and look for patterns to predict how my ways of reading and writing may develop in the future. I am excited to see the impact this class will have on me and the reader and writer that I am!

I chose this image because I love the outdoors and it is a photo I took the evening before I left for college. To me, it reminds me of home and my friends. The brightness of the sun causes the trees to darken and fade to a silhouette, serving as a good metaphor for the type of person I am, as I tend to give my full attention to the thing that I am focused on.

AVATAR

Hello everyone! My name is Gregory. My avatar is of a low poly red panda in a forest background. Low poly is a form of art design where relative large polygons are used to create the desired image. I found this type of art very aesthetically pleasing around 5 years ago and have been using different low poly animals as backgrounds for my computers. Red pandas are one of my favorite animals and I think they are very cute!

Sketch 1: Avatar

This is my avatar that I created! I didn’t use any CC-licensed images. As an introvert, I am most comfortable in my own company. While alone, I often relax by drifting off to sleep while listening to music. Some of my favorite artists are Phoebe Bridgers, Boygenius, and Taylor Swift! I am an avid boba fan, so I made sure to include my love for boba very visibly on my badge.

Initially, it was difficult to create a badge that incorporated aspects of my personality while also relating to the course. However, as I reviewed the syllabus and course description, I knew that I wanted to represent the sense of vulnerability I might feel when indulging in the course’s content. My open armed position means that I will be receptive to the heavy, important, and meaningful material that will be taught. By navigating this course with honesty and openness, I hope to learn more about my own healing process through the secret language of comics.

Avatar Week 1 Sketch

I chose this image of a box with old baseballs, a check, and some empty space because I believe it symbolizes some of the most important parts of myself. Academically, I believe the empty space within the box represents my openness to unique perspectives, ideas, and stories that we will read in this class. I chose baseball because sports and fitness are large parts of my identity as I love to work out and play various sports with friends in my free time. Finally, the check represents my interest in business as it is my intended major.
One difficulty I had in making my avatar was finding a photo that symbolizes both academic and personal interests. I wanted to use an avatar that would not be forcing the two ideas but would naturally allow both to be symbolized. Additionally, I had difficulty with figuring out how to add it to the website. This was due to trying to understand how to use my new Computer with a different operating system.

I was recruited to Emory to play basketball, so I decided to pick a photo of me holding a basketball for my avatar. I have been playing basketball since I was in kindergarten, and have dedicated the majority of my time to the sport. With basketball I have experienced my best and worst memories; it is a large part of my identity. I used a photo editing app to make my photo appear more like a cartoon, and to put my name at the bottom.

Sketch #1: Avatar

The image shown is the avatar I have created for this course. My avatar is an illustration I made a while ago of a Sanrio character named Pochacco raising his eyebrow suspiciously. I chose this as my avatar because Sanrio was a huge part of my childhood. From backpacks to water bottles, almost everything I owned had some sort of Sanrio character plastered on it. In terms of the photo editing, I struggled with adding my name to the image. In order to achieve the final product, I had to rely on an application called Picsart instead of Pixlr.

My AVATAR

In many ways, this picture captures who I am as a person and what my interests are. This picture depicts many family-sized boats docked in a harbor, which relates to me very well because my parents have a lake house up in North Georgia, which we visit often in the warmer months. I also like to consider Lake House my happy place, as I have tons of fun up there and have incredible bonding time with my family and friends. In addition, this photo also represents nature and being outside, which is another aspect of life that I enjoy. Whether it be playing sports or going on hikes, I love any activity that involves the outdoors. Water and boats also play a significant role in the picture, which signifies the sense of travel, which is a fun and important part of my life. My family likes to go on one “unique” vacation every year, where we explore new world places. Some recent sites we have explored include Spain, Paris, the Bahamas, Canada, the Netherlands, etc. Traveling is exciting because we can explore the world’s cultures and see how people go about their day.
