The Secret Language of Comics

Recreating a scene from Baby Driver

I chose to recreate an image from Baby Driver because it seemed manageable and I recently watched it again. My friend has a car on campus and I used my own sunglasses and earbuds. I tried finding another pair of sunglasses that were all black but was unable to. This assignment made me realize how difficult being an actor is. I attempted doing the same facial expression depicted in the image, but with the sunglasses, I realized how hard it can be to convey emotions effectively.

Sketch 9: Recreate a Movie Scene

I decided to recreate a scene from The Big Short which is one of my all-time favorite movies. This scene was very feasible to recreate since I had similar clothing, notebooks to scatter around my dorm, and a desk to include. However, when trying to capture the scene I encountered some challenges as I had to set my phone up on a timer which was balancing on a stack of books on my bed. Additionally, due to the phone being on a timer, I struggled to position both of my hands accurately in the scene due to the rush of lying down and getting into position.  I enjoyed this activity as I had to be very resourceful and creative about what scene I chose with the materials available to me.

Sunday Sketches~Sketch 9: Waterloo!

The moment I saw this assignment, I knew exactly what scene to recreate and how I was going to recreate it. The high school musical during my senior year was Mamma Mia! where I was fortunate to play the role of Tanya. The costumers were incredibly generous and allowed me to keep the white jumpsuit I wore when we performed the show’s finale: “Waterloo”. I brought it to school with me thinking of it as nothing more than a Halloween costume, but I was excited to find potential other uses for it, including this assignment.

The only obstacle I faced through this assignment was what to use as my microphone in the recreation. I ultimately decided to use a bottle of dry shampoo, mainly because it was white and matched my costume. I then photoshopped the recreated image onto a sparkly silver background and put it side-by-side with the original scene.

This has definitely been one of my favorite assignments by far, and I loved being able to revisit one of my favorite movie musicals!

Choose a single moment from a movie or television episode and recreate that scene as closely as you can in a single photograph. Think about how you can creatively use wardrobe items or props that you already have at your disposal and the landscapes and building spaces available to you in order to create your scene. In fact, you might find that it’s best to begin by thinking about what you might be able to pull off and to work backward from there to choosing a scene.

By definition, you don’t have incredibly powerful movie cameras, cinematographers, a cast and crew, a prop and set design department, and CGI f/x staff for post production; therefore, you are never going to perfectly recreate any scene. However, with a little creativity you can still create a powerful version of a scene even without all that fancy paraphernalia, as in the version of Jurassic World at the top of this post and others seen here.

More than a decade ago, I recreated these scenes above as part of a larger photographic creative project. For my version of Lost in Translation, I rearranged the furniture in my bedroom and borrowed my wife’s bathrobe. I could never quite get the tilt of my head right. For my recreation of Albrecht Dürer’s Self Portrait of 1500, I couldn’t reproduce the proportions because I was required to make all my shots 4×3 landscape photos and my hair wasn’t long enough to quite pull off the portrait. But I bought a black plastic tablecloth for 99 cents for the background and made the sleeve decorations with crayons on paper. I used a fuzzy scarf and an old leather jacket for the clothes. Despite taking numerous shots and studying the painting very, very closely, I could never get my right hand into exactly the correct position.
