The Secret Language of Comics

Is It A Bird? Is It A Plane?

I combined pictures of birds with a picture of two planes. The idea of combining something living with something mechanical seemed really fun to me, so I kept that in mind while scrolling on Flickr. When I saw the planes, the natural next step was to find bird wings to replace the wings of the plane. The biggest challenge was the editing. Attaching the wings to the plane was a bit of a challenge and required some cropping, blending, and transforming. My final image conveys a plane with bird wings.

Visual Note-Taking

For visual note-taking, I took notes on the major mass extinctions and the Cambrian explosion from BIOL 141. This activity was particularly helpful for realizing and understanding chronological events. I learned that I tend to memorize words without necessarily understanding the ideas themselves. Using visual note-taking, I was able to better understand how each event impacted the others and how they related to each other. I also prefer to use less colors. I only used my black Pilot-G2 pen, red Energel pen, and green Power Line 25000 highlighter for this assignment. More colors were distracting and took away from the understanding of the concept. I used the red to mark any important points and the highlighter to mark headers.

I don’t find visual note-taking to be my preferred note-taking method. I prefer to write and memorize the material, then find real-world applications, rather than trying to mix conceptualizing and memorizing at the same time. Yet, this activity will be very useful when I am trying to memorize and study chronological events.

Literacy Narrative ReflectioN

Writing the Literacy Narrative felt simultaneously like writing a personal narrative and also like writing a rhetorical analysis essay. I felt like I had to analyze my achievements as a writer but also how my opinions about writing changed over time. “Intuition and Other Thoughts” was written as I wrote any other piece of writing, which was essentially to write every single thought I had, then cut out anything unnecessary and using that big bulk of writing as an outline. Yet, writing “Intuition and Other Thoughts” was unlike anything else I have ever written. The piece ends up being a love letter to my mother and her major involvement in the type of writer I become. It also speaks on my opinion of the writing-and-revising process.

The writing process was different, due to the X-Pages Exercise. It was very similar to what I usually do but much more helpful when clarifying a single scene, which I ended up embedding into the narrative. The scene I described for the X-Pages Exercise became the frame of the tiny pockets of scenes I added in. I do wonder if it made me too focused on the scene of the narrative, rather than the actual point of the essay. It might be my missing of Texas that may have resulted in too much Waco geography knowledge that any person not from Waco will ever need.

I realized that I have a lot of different, conflicting emotions about writing, which I think a lot of people can say. My mother becoming a central figure of the narrative was not what I was expecting, but looking back, it seems obvious that she would be the focus of how I became the writer that I am today. Funnily enough, if my mother would read the narrative, I think she would tell me the same thing she tells me there, “Get to the point! Write about me less.” I think I used to view myself as a really bad writer but came to acknowledge through writing this that even though I may be a bad writer, it is okay because at least I have room to grow.

I think people would find the sentence, “I am a slow learner, a slow writer—a perfectionist when it comes to word choice and each individual sentence but easily lost when it comes to THE BIG IDEA,” most interesting because it describes what kind of writer I am. Most people expect perfectionism to be helpful when writing or studying, but it can result in a pointless, circular, or even boring piece of writing if you lose sight of the big picture.

Her cross-Eyed demon dog

I took the hair clip out of my hair while trying to think of an idea for the English assignment. Maybe I could use pom-poms for stars or a chip bag as a dress? I mindlessly played with my hair clip, holding it open then letting it snap shut. It kind of looked like teeth.

Major is my best friend’s dog. And he is the only dog I have ever disliked.

Major is a Chihuahua mix, a fearless dog that ruined my favorite hoodie and two of my shirts with his tiny, sharp teeth. I drew him in all his vicious, trembling, cross-eyed glory and used my hair clip to represent his teeth and his nose.

AVATAR

There are very few things that I am sure about, but one of them is this: Paddington 2 is one of the best children’s movies of all time. Few movies of our time deliver the seemingly obvious message of “be kind” without being either condescending or cliché, but Paddington 2 does it magnificently. Paddington is a polite, sometimes naïve bear who loves marmalade, constantly causing problems but also spreading an endless amount of joy and comfort wherever he goes. In his red hat, blue coat, and suitcase, Paddington is an icon and role model.

I also really like Legos and used to build Lego sets with my dad. Every birthday or Christmas since I was little, we would sit down together and build my Lego set, with me building it incorrectly and my dad patiently breaking it apart and fixing it.

I did not know what pixels were and had a five minute research session on what pixels are. The rest was not too challenging.
