The Secret Language of Comics

Sketch 5:Triptych

This Triptych is a commentary on the Miami Dolphins’ win against the Denver Broncos on September 24th. 70-20 is the final score which was the most points scored in an NFL game since the 1960’s. “Covering the spread” is a betting term that refers to the fact that the Broncos could have lost by several points and the bet still would have cashed. Losing by 50, however, is a different story. The picture, that is split into three, is a common meme that has been circulating around the internet for years. According to “Know Your Meme.com,” the Meme is titled “Fourth-Wall-Breaking White Guy” and “refers to a three-panel version of Blinking White Guy meme which utilizes an additional frame of Drew Scanlon looking directly at the camera”. The Meme format went viral on Reddit in 2019.

Bleeding Mouth

After nearly a month at Emory, I have been missing my brothers. I think my subconscious pushed my in that direction when looking through my camera roll to complete this assignment. One of my favorite memories with them is catching sharks at Fire Island. My older brother (center) is a master fisherman and conservationist who has taught me everything I know about fish and the ocean. Another thing Fire Island is known for is its sunsets. So, I spliced the two together using Pixlr and the result is a photo that creates a strange feeling. The two horizon lines blend seamlessly which makes the photo look real at first glance. However, the bottom part was taken near midday and the top is actually a different body of water. In my opinion, this generates an unnerving sensation for the viewer, although that feeling might be hard to place.

Literacy Narrative pt. 1 Review Post

At first, it felt strange to do the prewriting exercises. However, after thinking about my past experiences that shaped my writing and reading for 45 minutes, I felt comforted by all the great teachers who taught me. I used this narrative as a way to explore my writing journey chronologically. I started in 5th grade and ended with my most important essay to date, the common app personal statement. Looking back at the literacy narrative some changes I would make would be to add more examples and go into greater description about my teachers. The essay is as much about them collectively as it is about me. One thing I did not mention enough was the impact COVID had on my writing skills.

Visual Note Taking

As I was completing my visual notes, I found that even the action of re-writing them ingrained them in my mind. Ironically, the notes are about how your mind engages with visual stimuli and processes them. The use of smell is particularly important in the case of the Ice cream. It was also pleasant to draw some stick figures with animated emotions to match the notes. The flow chart that ensued after several minutes of thinking “I don’t know how to draw. How am I going to accomplish this assignment?” wound up really helping me with understanding the concepts and internalizing the main point of the lecture: the difference between personal and public culture.

“Bee Electric”

Recently I have been making a lot of new friends. We have been playing poker almost every day for fun and to hang out socially. When I was looking at the prompt for this assignment, I had the playing cards on my desk from the previous night. I threw the toy car into the mix (my roommate’s) and came up with the climate-conscious title when I saw that the Ace of Spades, my favorite card, had the word “Bee” on it. More wordplay exists in the title than what originally meets the eye. The word “electric” not only refers to the car, but has recently taken on a new popular meaning. Many teenagers and young adults now call their favorite activities like Football or Texas Hold ’em Poker, electric, meaning instead magical or stirring.

Avatar sk1

I chose this avatar because of the wordplay you get when pronouncing my last name correctly and my connection to music. Schuchat, pronounced “shook-it,” is often challenging for most people to say correctly the first time. Usually, I get called “shoe-chat,” “shoe-cat,” or something along those lines. A name is integral to one’s identity, so the maracas symbolize the most common thing people think of when I tell them how to pronounce my last name. Also, the value of music in my life can not be overstated. So, the use of an instrument is not a coincidence (milkshakes are the other popular object people think of when I tell them “shook, past tense of shake, like a…” ). My life revolves around music, whether listening to it 24/7, scheduling around playing by myself or with a band, or writing about it in college essays. I love music and have kept it in my daily routine for years.
